Jean Young has been manager of the English Language Centre since it was set up in September 1997. She came to City University of Hong Kong from the Language Institute of the University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand, where she lectured on the MA Applied Linguistics and the Postgraduate Diploma in Second Language Teaching and co-ordinated the teacher training courses offered. Before that she worked in the British Council English Language Centre in Hong Kong for a total of twelve years, latterly as Deputy Manager.

Her professional interests include teacher training, learner strategies and the development of independent learning. Over a period of several years, she wrote a weekly article for the Education section of the Hong Kong Standard advising students on how to prepare for the Use of English examination and she co-authored a textbook for beginners during her time at the British Council.

Her personal interests include Scottish country dancing, roleplaying games and photography.
